Part 3: Discovering Books: the right author, genre, and more
There are many ways to break the cycle of selecting books – one usually involving recommendations or reading reviews online.
If you’ve been looking at shaking things up – as we did with our first experiments reading Non Fiction titles this year! Here are some fun activities to try out.
Pick up a book, regardless of who has written it, what the title or subject matter is, and turn to page 88. Use this as your only guide to whether you want to read more from this book or not.
This is a simple exercise, best executed with a friend in tow. You close your eyes and run your hand along the spine of every book on a shelf. When your friend says stop, you stop and pick up the book you landed on. Note: this is for the serious experimental reader but if you’re standing in front of a genre you know you like, it’s good fun.
Millennial solutions to millennial problems? The concept of subscription boxes works largely around signing up with a website that sends you a book or two along with some merch every month. Depending on how much you want to invest, there are options where you can receive up to 5 or 6 books each month with these themed goodies.
