To the people who have been told we are dumber than our previous generation. To the ones that are wishing for a way to escape to a different dimension. To the human beings tired and seeking to prove all those judgemental people wrong, I urge you to do so. How? A book.
You may blanch. You may gasp in horror, but think about it. Don’t you want the knowledge of our predecessors both near and far? Don’t the far away worlds call to you, begging you to nestle yourself between their pages? You may say that reading is boring, or that books just don’t interest you. Yet, I must ask, have you read every genre? I firmly believe that out of the millions of books in the world, one will spark a roaring flame in your mind. It will be one that roars for more fuel and you shall be powerless against it.
Plus the possibilities for reading material are endless. If you want to cook, grab a cookbook. Or perhaps the intricate past intrigues you, in which case the histories of Napoleon and Nelson Mandela await. Maybe it is food for thought you are looking for, then look no further. From poems on life, to philosophy and why our lives fall into strife. Besides what do you have to lose?
Maybe you’re worried about what your dearest friends might say. Did you ever wonder if they’re worried about what you may say? Maybe they too love reading, but pursue it secretly. Perhaps the both of you could start a book club, and help others discover various aspects of themselves. Let’s be honest now about what sounds better: getting drunk with horrible loud music hurting your head as you are pushed about in a sweaty throng of people while you look for your friend or sitting at home, your friend right beside you sipping a drink of their choice with soothing music in the background as you both loose yourselves in world’s filled with wonder. The answer is the second one. Maybe not always, but most times. You may say you read, but social media does not count.
When you ‘read’ an Instagram post, scan over your Facebook feed, or relentlessly refresh of Tumblr, you are just looking for things to pass your time. Your eyes are stringing together words and phrases, your brain comprehending them, then simply discarding it. For a moment it may make you smile or say aww. So you like it. Maybe even comment. You are not reading what you’re going through, you’re skimming over it.
You see, when you read each and every word’s syllable sinks into your mind. It is your mind that creates the sentences. When you read the true impact of words becomes apparent. You begin to wonder, marvelling at not only the way in which the words were intertwined; but also at how the same phrase can have multiple meanings. Those meanings seep into your mind and each book will leave its own mark.
A book, any book, can offer you a lesson, or at the very least something meaningful. So relax and stay inside or maybe go somewhere, anywhere and read. Allow your mind to slip away, from all your problems, to find respite in the shade of a tremendously good book.
